See It…..Feel It…..Trust It!

A sound (and consistent) pre-shot routine is invaluable.

To avoid the temptation of cluttering your mind (especially the left side of your brain) with a myriad of swing thoughts……try this simple formula:

  • See a successful shot prior to addressing the ball.  Good visualization precedes good shots.  The first thing to do in customizing your pre-shot routine is to See It!
  • Next, you need to Feel It.  Rehearse the exact feel you will be attempting to pull off once you address the ball.  Hold your finish position for at least 3 seconds to reinforce the good feedback for your swing (or stroke).
  • Finally, Trust It!  Some of the best players in the world admit to going blank (or not thinking about anything while they swing) throughout their motion.  This built in trust will come from sound planning as well as a ton of repetition (okay, maybe not a ton….maybe just a few thousand reps).

You really only need to concentrate between 20 – 30 seconds per shot.  To avoid paralysis by analysis, implement a consistent pre-shot routine.

Another terrific benefit to the above formula is the avoidance of making some shots more important than others.  Once you “own” your routine, you’ll be much better equipped to stay in the present.  Which means you’ll have the best chance possible to attempt every shot with equal value.

The way I like to say it is, “You need a plan for caring the right amount.”  Most of us have “choked” over shots in the past.  It’s a crummy feeling!  Master your routine and you’ll be well on your way to overcoming those less than satisfying experiences.
